Your Growth Sets the Ceiling
Here’s your Wednesday’s Coaching Compass. A weekly reflection for coaches navigating the human side of performance.
Principle: Your Growth Sets the Ceiling
Teams don’t rise to the level of their talent, they rise to the level of their leadership. And leadership grows when the coach grows.
Self-development isn’t a luxury in high-performance; it’s the foundation. If we want players who are adaptable, self-aware, resilient, and curious, then we have to model it first.
You can’t take people somewhere you haven’t gone.
Learning isn’t something you “fit in.” It’s something you build around.
Perspective: The Learning Loop
Most coaches nowadays think they’re learning because they’re consuming. Watching VOD, reading game analysis, scrolling Twitter threads, listening to podcasts.
But consumption without integration isn’t learning.
A simple learning loop you can implement today:
Input: A concept, story, or model you encounter.
Reflection: What does this mean for me?
Application: Where can I experiment with this?
Feedback: What happened? What changed?
Adjustment: What will I do next time?
High-performance coaches are intentional and do the hard work of thinking and applying the ideas they come across.
Story: The 2004 All Blacks
In 2024 the New Zealand All Blacks’ culture was broken. They had issues on and off the field, including a toxic culture around alcohol.
Their solution?
When the leader improves, everybody improves.
This led to them implementing an ongoing development program for their leadership group as Mental Skills Coach and Manager, Gilbert Enoka, shares in his new book “Become Unstoppable”.
“It takes a deliberate and targeted mindset to ensure that a Leadership Group such as ours can grow and develop. Over the next few years, we brought in experts from other files to discuss the ways in which our standards and mental game could be improved. Among them were successful CEOs and company directors, managers from other title-winning sports teams, military experts, and even a neuroscientist. The All Blacks selected for the Leadership Group visibly advanced through this work, and the players around them were transformed into competent deputies. But the coaches were advancing too, and as a result the All Blacks eventually became the world’s greatest sports team.”
Question:
What is one process you can add to your routine to improve your development?
Until next week,
Caleb
